Description

A Ladder Drill is a speed exercise where an individual steps in and out of a ladder laid flat on the ground, improving agility and footwork.

How to Do Ladder Drill

    Setup

    Lay an agility ladder flat on the ground. Stand at one end of the ladder with your feet hip-width apart, facing its length.

    Setup

    Adopt an athletic stance with a slight bend in your knees and a forward lean from your hips, ready to move.

    Step your right foot into the first box, immediately followed by your left foot, so both feet are briefly inside the box.

  4. 4

    Quickly step your right foot out to the right side of the ladder, then your left foot out to the left side, so both feet are now outside the first box.

  5. 5

    Without pausing, bring your right foot back into the second box, followed by your left, then quickly step both feet out again to the sides of the second box.

  6. 6

    Continue this rapid "in-out-in-out" pattern down the entire length of the ladder, maintaining quick, light steps.

Tips

  • Stay on the balls of your feet throughout the drill to maintain quickness and springiness, avoiding flat-footed landings.
  • Pump your arms vigorously in coordination with your leg movements, as this enhances balance and drives your speed forward.
  • Keep your gaze focused a few steps ahead of you, rather than directly down at your feet, to anticipate movements and maintain fluidity.
  • Start slowly to master the footwork pattern before gradually increasing your speed and intensity.

  • ×Looking down at your feet slows reaction time; instead, keep your head up and eyes focused ahead to anticipate the next step.
  • ×Stomping or landing heavily reduces agility and increases impact; aim for light, quick, and quiet footfalls.
  • ×Not using your arms effectively hinders balance and momentum; actively pump your arms to drive your legs and maintain rhythm.
