How to Do Jab. Boxing

  1. 1
    Setup

Stand in a boxing guard stance with your non-dominant foot slightly forward, knees bent, and weight evenly distributed on the balls of your feet.

  2. 2
    Setup

Keep your rear hand firmly guarding your chin and your lead hand extended slightly forward, elbow down, with your fist at cheek height.

  3. 3

Exhale sharply as you rapidly extend your lead fist straight forward, rotating your palm down and pivoting your lead foot slightly.

  4. 4

Drive power from your lead hip and shoulder, ensuring your elbow extends fully without locking the joint, aiming for a target directly in front of you.

  5. 5

Immediately retract your lead fist back to the starting guard position, keeping your rear hand up to protect your face throughout the entire movement.

Tips

  • Focus on a quick, snappy retraction of the punch; the speed of the return is as important as the speed of the extension for defense and setting up follow-up punches.
  • Engage your core and rotate your lead hip and shoulder slightly with each jab to generate more power and prevent punching with arm strength alone.
  • Keep your chin tucked down and your non-punching hand glued to your face throughout the entire movement to maintain a strong defensive posture.
  • Breathe out sharply (exhale) with each punch to engage your core, improve power, and maintain a consistent rhythm.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Dropping the rear hand while punching compromises defense; keep your rear hand firmly against your cheek or chin as you jab.
  • ×Leaning too far forward or overextending the punch can throw you off balance and make you vulnerable; ensure your weight remains balanced and your punch is controlled within your reach.
  • ×Punching with only arm strength neglects power generation; actively rotate your lead hip and shoulder into the punch to maximize force.
