How to Do Left Hook. Boxing

  1. 1
    Setup

Begin in your boxing stance with your feet shoulder-width apart, lead (left) foot slightly forward, and both hands up protecting your face.

  2. 2
    Setup

Shift your weight to your lead (left) foot, simultaneously pivoting your left heel outward and rotating your left hip counter-clockwise.

  3. 3

As your hip rotates, drive the power through your core and swing your left arm in a tight horizontal arc, keeping your elbow bent at approximately 90 degrees and your fist horizontal.

  4. 4

Aim to strike the target with the first two knuckles of your fist, ensuring your elbow stays level with your fist or slightly higher at impact.

  5. 5

Immediately after impact, retract your left arm along the same arc, bringing your hand back to your guard position to protect your face.

Tips

  • Generate power from the ground up by pivoting your lead foot and rotating your entire hip and torso, not just swinging your arm.
  • Keep your left elbow high and aligned with your fist throughout the punch to maintain a strong structure and deliver maximum force.
  • Exhale sharply through your mouth as your punch lands to engage your core and increase the power and snap of the hook.
  • Maintain a tight guard with your right hand pressed against your chin or cheek throughout the entire movement to protect yourself.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Swinging with a wide, looping arm reduces power and telegraphs the punch; keep your elbow tight and your arc compact for a faster, more forceful hook.
  • ×Failing to pivot the lead foot limits hip rotation and power; ensure your lead heel lifts and pivots outward to fully engage your hips and core.
  • ×Dropping your right hand while punching leaves you vulnerable; always keep your non-punching hand firmly guarding your chin.
