How to Do Spin Back Kick. Kickboxing

  1. 1
    Setup

Begin in a fighting stance with your lead foot forward and hands up to protect your face. Visualize your target directly behind you.

  2. 2
    Setup

Initiate the spin by pivoting on the ball of your lead foot, turning your back towards your target while looking over your lead shoulder to maintain sight.

  3. 3

Continue the rotation, bringing your rear knee up towards your chest, chambering the kick. Keep your core tight and maintain balance.

  4. 4

Extend your rear leg forcefully, striking the imaginary target with your heel or the bottom of your foot. Immediately retract your leg after impact.

  5. 5

Complete the spin, landing softly on your kicking foot, and return to your initial fighting stance. Prepare for your next move.

Tips

  • Generate maximum power by focusing on a strong hip rotation throughout the spin, rather than relying solely on leg strength.
  • Maintain eye contact with your target over your lead shoulder for as long as possible during the spin to ensure accuracy and balance.
  • Ensure your standing foot pivots fully, allowing your hips to turn completely and set up a powerful, full-range kick.
  • Exhale sharply on impact to engage your core and maximize the force of your kick, while also protecting your midsection.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Not pivoting enough on the standing foot reduces the power and range of your kick; ensure a complete 180-degree pivot or more to fully open your hips.
  • ×Dropping your hands during the spin exposes your head and compromises balance; keep your guard high throughout the entire movement.
  • ×Kicking with a bent knee diminishes striking force and reach; fully extend your leg at the point of impact to deliver a powerful heel strike.
