Description

A powerful punch thrown with the right hand in a hooking motion, targeting a boxing bag.

How to Do Boxing Right Hook (with boxing bag)

  1. 1
    Setup

Assume a boxing stance with your lead (left) foot slightly forward, feet shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent. Keep your chin tucked and your left hand up to protect your face, with your right hand near your chin.

  2. 2

Initiate the hook by pivoting your lead (left) foot inward, simultaneously rotating your hips and torso counter-clockwise. Drive power from your rear (right) foot, pushing off the ball of your foot.

  3. 3

As your body rotates, extend your right arm out to the side, maintaining a 90-degree bend at the elbow and keeping your elbow high. Aim to strike the bag with the first two knuckles of your right hand.

  4. 4

Impact the bag with a powerful, concise snap, ensuring your wrist is straight and firm. Immediately recoil your arm back to your starting guard position to prepare for the next action.

Tips

  • Focus on generating power from your hips and core rotation, not just an arm swing; imagine your body as a coiled spring releasing energy.
  • Keep your elbow at shoulder height throughout the punch, forming a 90-degree angle with your arm to deliver a strong, concise impact.
  • Exhale sharply through your mouth as your punch makes contact with the bag, which helps to engage your core and increase power.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Swinging with a straight arm instead of a hook reduces power and can strain the elbow; ensure your elbow maintains a 90-degree bend and stays elevated to shoulder height.
  • ×Failing to rotate the hips and pivot the lead foot results in an arm-only punch lacking power; drive the punch by rotating your hips and pivoting your lead foot simultaneously with your body.
  • ×Dropping the non-punching hand leaves your face exposed; always keep your left hand tightly guarding your chin and temple throughout the entire motion.
